On November 17th, 2021, Professor Bill Marras was featured on the podcast, Engineering Solutions to Back Pain.  This 29-minute program was hosted by OSU College of Engineering Dean, Ayanna Howard, as part of the College's Enqinuity series.  These podcasts explore stories of innovation (and ingenuity) among faculty and students that are pushing boundaries and developing game-changing technologies.

Low back pain is the second most common reason people visit their physicians and the leading cause of disability in the world.  Millions of people suffer from back pain, lose time at work due to it, or become dependent on opioid painkillers prescribed to deal with it.  In this podcast, Dr. Marras, who is the Executive and Scientific Director of OSU's Spine Research Institute (SRI), shares how SRI researchers and practitioners from divergent fields apply their collective knowledge to solve what seems like an unsolvable problem.  He tells Dean Howard how he, as a systems engineer, found himself researching back pain, why companies are interested in SRI’s expertise to prevent workplace injuries, and how his team is helping tackle the opioid addiction epidemic that impacts so many families.
